At the third power unit of Kalinin NPP, for the first time in Russia, the latest system for monitoring the containment of reactor compartment will be launched. During planned overhaul at the third power unit of Kalinin NPP, specialists have started modernizing the complex of reactor compartment containment monitoring systems (CCMS). This is the first time when such works are carried out at Russian nuclear power plants.
"Previously, the tension of tendons, the condition of the containment and its tightness were monitored by three different systems. After modernization, they will be replaced by the latest unified system, which will significantly enhance the safety of power unit operation," said Alexander Dorofeev. "The workstations, basic and applied software, information exchange controllers, switchboards, and signal processing devices of reactor compartment are being replaced at present time."
In addition, an expert system based on "CONT" domestic software package will be incorporated unto CCMS design. It is necessary to analyse the state of the containment and evaluate its strength. To cover the entire volume of the containment, the system virtually divides it into 15,000 controlled zones, creates a detailed three-dimensional model and makes calculation in each zone.
The implementation of such a large-scale project will significantly simplify maintenance of the system, reduce the personnel training time, and also reduce the likelihood of abnormal operations related to the human factor in operation of the power unit.
